The end – Tamsin Janu

This is my last blog post!

Endings can be hard.

They can be hard for the reader, who has just spent days, weeks or even months reading about a book’s characters and getting invested in their trials and tribulations. When readers finish a book they are forced to say goodbye.

Endings can also be hard for the writer. There is lots of pressure to write an ending that will be satisfying for readers and tie up loose ends. You don’t want your reader to finish the final page and be so enraged that they throw your book across the room!

The ending of a holiday can be hard too. The last day of our European holiday was a bit sad. We had to check out of our accommodation, drag our heavy bags onto the U-bahn (metro) which took us into town, then hunt around for somewhere to have breakfast. I perked up a bit because for brekky I ate my final piece of Austrian apple strudel, which was delicious, we found some street markets where we bought some fruit, and then we relaxed in a pretty park until it was time to go to the airport. The flights home were long and hard but easier than on the way there – probably because the Husband and I had learned a lot about how to keep the Baby entertained and happy!

And I think that’s the most important thing to show at the end of a story – that your character or characters have learned or grown in some way. Stories centre on a character’s journey, which is often filled with both happy and challenging times, and reading about someone’s journey isn’t satisfying unless they come out the other side a little different (hopefully wiser!) than they were at the beginning.

I hope you learned something from my blog posts over the past month. It was lots of fun sharing little tidbits from my European holiday and giving you some writing tips! If you have any comments or questions feel free to comment on any of my posts, visit my website at www.tamsinjanu.com or email me at tamsinjanuauthor@gmail.com.

I wish you the best of luck with all of your future writing (and travelling)!
