I’m still obsessed with how things sound!
My last post was all about music and writing and the things they have in common. Most importantly rhythm. The way our writing sounds can actually help us express what we are trying to say. A good example of that is humour. Some words just sound funny!!
Did you know the letter ‘K’ is supposedly the funniest letter in the alphabet? I kid you not!
Let’s test it out!
Kerfuffle or disturbance?
Relish or pickle?
Yep. I think K wins. I mean kerplunk could never be a serious word. It just sounds TOO funny! So does pickle!
Personally I think ‘P’ gives ‘K’ a run for its money in the humour stakes.
Of course we all know who was the KING of funny words. I’ll give you a clue…
snozzwanglers
Yep. It’s Roald Dahl. He took funny words to another level by making up his own. He even had his own name for it. He called it Gobblefunk!
Roald Dahl knew some words just sound funnier than others. Especially unusual sounds we don’t hear very often. Here’s some of his gobblefunk.
Flunkgungled – caught
Whoopsy-splunkers – fantastic
Trogglehumper – really bad dream
Children’s book author and illustrator Dr. Seuss was pretty good at it too. Anyone for a floob-boober-bab-boober-bubs or some yuzz-a-ma-tuzz ??
Why don’t you guys have a go at making up your own funny words. Elephant bottom stickers for anyone who posts me a good one!!
