A book trailer is a bit like a movie trailer… a teaser of what you might find in the book. Some are professionally made by a book’s publisher. Sometimes the author of a book might make one themselves.
If you want to see some book trailers, hop onto YouTube and type in “book trailer”. There are LOTS of them!

One of the things I’ve loved most about making book trailers is learning how to do special effects on my computer. One of the trailers for The Supernatural Survival Guide had ghosts in it. Each ghost was shot separately against a blue screen and then superimposed into the scene with me. But I also used physical effects — a fan to blow bits of tissue paper at me while the ghosts were flying around.
This trailer was shot during one of Melbourne’s Covid lockdowns… so I could only use stuff I had at home. Yes, I do own that suit of armour.
Today’s technology allows anyone to create videos like this just using their smart phone or tablet. Why not give it a try? There are lots of fan-made book trailers on YouTube to get inspired by.
