Play Parramatta

Over the first weekend in November, up to eight writers will be selected to co-create a new full length theatre script.

Facilitated by Augusta Supple, the writers will explore Parramatta, gathering observations, conversations, and reflections on the city as it transforms.

Through a collaborative writers’ room process, the writers will create and develop a unique playscript that celebrates the diverse voices of our community.

The final draft will be presented in a reading on the last day of the play generator.

This project invites all writers with an interest in writing for theatre or improving dialogue within fiction and non-fiction narratives to apply.

About the Process

Augusta’s process focusses on the power of diverse viewpoints and voices through an opportunity for writers to work alongside each other, experimenting with form, language, time and space. The aim is not homogeneity, but to explore and celebrate the broad expressions possible within theatrical form, each writer maintaining their voice, but finding opportunities for thematic resonances, counterpoint expression and visual echoes between moments and pieces. This process is about experimentation and collaboration. The work aims for scale – like that of Opera, but with principles based in jazz improvisation – spontaneity, joy and playfulness. Principles of engagement include unconditional positive regard, imagination and writer-led theatre.

What you will achieve:

  • Each writer will generate up to 10 pages of content over the two days
  • Collaborative relationships with fellow writers
  • Experimenting with new forms and ideasTop of FormBottom of Form

Across the 2-day you will:

  • Write up to 10 pages within 48 hours, based on public sites in Parramatta.
  • Collaborate to create a new full-length piece of theatre.
  • All writers will spend a minimum of one hour together at selected sites to observe and share the experience.
  • Each writer retains ownership of their work, ideas, and characters.
  • Writers will support each other’s work, focusing on thematic resonances and narrative experimentation.
  • This is an opportunity to explore creative practices, resulting in a mosaic of writing.
  • Each writer can read their work at the end.
