Five Books I Love – Tim Harris

Hi WestWorders,

What have you been reading lately?

As a writer, I love reading the books of other authors. I find it inspiring to see how fellow writers shape their ideas; how they use language to tell stories; and how they develop characters and interesting plots.

Here are five great books I’ve recently had the pleasure of reading. But rather than do the usual quick plot summary, I’d like to pinpoint a small detail in each book that I really enjoyed.

  1. The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor

This book has the most beautiful similes. Amelia Mellor is truly a master of figurative language. Some of the similes had me smiling and shaking my head in awe.

  1. The Wolves of Greycoat Hall by Lucinda Gifford

The humour in ‘Wolves’ is genius. It is so gentle and subtle that it feels like spending time with an old (and funny) friend.

  1. The 1000-Year-Old-Boy by Ross Welford

The concept. Imagine being able to live forever – but in the body of a young boy. This novel nails a wonderful concept with realism and a pinch of humour.

  1. The Year the Maps Changed by Danielle Binks

The writing voice. I just love how the story unfolds from Fred’s perspective. She reveals ideas with such simple and powerful metaphors.

  1. The Dog Runner by Bren MacDibble

Tension. There were so many wonderfully tense scenes that kept me up at late, reading a little longer than I’d planned. It’s a wonderful thing to enjoy the thrill of tension in a book.

What about you? What have you been reading and enjoying?

Tim
