The Rumble comes to Blacktown!
Welcome to The Rumble!
Join us at Blacktown Arts Centre this Saturday night (21 April) for The Rumble—the third and final heat in the western Sydney youth poetry slam competition. Students from four Blacktown high schools will perform in teams (and for the brave, as individuals), plus there’ll be an open mic for any audience members who are inspired on the night.
This is the second year WestWords has partnered with Word Travels on The Rumble.
This year, we ran two days of wordshops (see what we did there?!) at Rooty Hill HS, involving students from Rooty Hill (one of our key partner high schools in the Blacktown area), Blacktown Boys HS, The Hills Sports HS, St Andrews College Marayong and St Clair HS. The wordshops were led by Miles Merrill, the founder of Word Travels, Candy Royalle, Morganics, and, in a bit of a coup for all of us, Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye from Project V.O.I.C.E. (Please note that the links to these artists may contain mature content.)
During the wordshops, the students learned writing and performance techniques, creating their own dynamic and inspiring pieces about identity, culture and life in the ‘burbs.
So come along for an amazing and inspiring night of spoken word, written and performed by these remarkable young men and women from western Sydney. The winning team from Saturday’s event will go on to compete against teams from Liverpool and Parramatta at Parramatta Riverside Theatres as part of Sydney Writers’ Festival. The winning team from the SWF final will go on to compete in Melbourne at the interstate final of The Rumble.
Hope to see you on Saturday! To book, call 9839 6558.
